Are you heading toward burn out? 10 signs you need to unplug

Happy Summer!!

I recently disappeared for a good month or so because I desperately needed to unplug, unfortunately I {as usual} waited until a complete shut down was imminent, and then just fell off the face of the internet for a month. It happens. It happens to all of us. I actually have a precious friend who just came back to facebook after 2 years away. In her first post back she bravely shared of her divorce and having to change careers, taking care of her children, and all the last 2 years had held which could not include being plugged in because for her that was too much. I would argue for anyone that is too much, but she is one of the few that actually listened to her heart and her body and unplugged. Do you wonder if maybe you are in need of unplugging?

Anne Lamott has an amazing Ted Talk sharing little bits of wisdom from her life, but one of my favorite things she says is…

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

There you have it. We all need to unplug, if you are wondering if that includes you here are a few little yes/no questions to ask yourself…

  1. Do you wake up in the morning still tired?

  2. Do you check your phone/computer/internet first thing when you wake up?

  3. Does you social media feed make you feel bad about where you are in life? Insignificant? Unloveable or unattractive? Jealous?

  4. Do you use television or the internet to zone out and escape from life?

  5. Do you get easily overwhelmed with the amount of expectations and commitments in your life?

  6. Do you obsess over things you read or see on the internet? Do they stay with you throughout the day {like political stories or tragedies}?

  7. Are you struggling with depression or anxiety attacks?

  8. Do you chose working over time with friends and family? Over moving your body or getting out in nature?

  9. Are you fighting often with people you love?

  10. Have you prioritized everything and everyone else for longer than you can remember? Have you forgotten who you are?

If you answered yes to more than half of these, I would recommend you unplug for a bit. It doesn’t have to be a month or 2 years. It can be a week or a day. Maybe you want to commit to unplugging once a week completely, or one week a month maybe?? It’s completely up to you love, listen to your soul and your heart.
