How to take care of yourself during and after secondary Trauma

First off, what is secondary trauma?

Secondary Trauma, also known as secondary traumatic stress, is “the emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences of another. Its symptoms mimic those of post-traumatic stress disorder.” So if you are a social worker, counselor, therapist, police officer, foster parent, adoptive parent, nurse, doctor, EMT, etc… chances are you have experienced some secondary trauma.

I think that the thing most difficult part of secondary trauma is recognizing that it exists. Those of us who communicate with people experiencing traumatic stress cannot imagine that those experiences would translate to us, the helpers, but it does.
